Isn’t 31-26 equivalent to 31-27?
I needed a little help from the engine here but this is my understanding of problem 753.
- 32-26 is equivalent to 1. 32-27 if white follows with 2. 7-2. But white doesn’t, they can now play 2. 18-14 and hold the draw. So 26 is important because the king can reach 24 and so 18-14 loses to 8-12 after which the king can attack 19 from either side.
The following variants are interesting, showing how easy it is to make a quick move that looks good but loses.
31-26 7-3? 26-22 BW
31-26 18-14 26-23? 7-3! WW
