White has other moves than to sacrifice and lose. Why does white make these moves?

I agree, the defense chosen by the engine is terrible. The better try other than 2. 13-9 sacrificing material is 2. 28-24. The problem is the checker on 3 rapidly traps the checker on 24 and all of white’s pieces are opposed. So the games ends quickly either way.
In the game played, Martins missed 2-6 and instead went for the king with 14-17 but that only draws.
Interesting how engines play when a loss is inevitable. Some prolong play as long a possible.
