Only a computer would play 13-9 (Problem 1733)

Again, look at the problem before this post. If you pick the first move (somewhat hard) the computer just gives you a piece, guaranteeing a win. This play makes it harder to get a win and is much more interesting.

[FEN “W:W13,15,21,24,25,26,27,28,31:B1,5,6,7,8,12,14,18,20”]

  1. 24-19 7-11 2. 26-23 11-16 3. 28-24 14-17 4. 21x14 6-9 5. 13x6 1x17 6. 23x14 16x32 *

It wasn’t the engine that chose 13-9 giving up the piece. Believe it or not, it was Freedman in the game played. And he fought back to a draw! Check out move 15.

There are puzzles with really inhuman defenses that kind of ruin it, and I appreciate you pointing these out. I do want to disable or change them. But in this case, the generator was trying to choose the more human move.

That’s very interesting. Kingsrow did pick 13-9, which gives up a piece and should lead to a Black win. Red made some iffy moves but could have won as late as this:

[FEN “B:W7,19,21,23,24,25,26,27:B1,9,11,12,14,16,17,18,20”]

  1. 11-15 19x10 2. 17-22 26x17 3. 9-13 7-3 4. 13x29 *

11-15 is an amazing move, 19X10 backing up the pitch and squeeze 17-22 26X17 9-13 7-3 13X29; making it a two for two trade and ending up with a piece up and a fairly clear win for Black. I doubt I would have seen this sequence, definitely worthy of a master.
